Book Reviews: part 1

Books have always been a big part of my life, so I wanted to share a few recent reads with you! A few of the books on this list were longer and more dense than others, so it took me a little longer to get through them, but I enjoyed them for the most part!

The Perks of Being a Wallflower by Stephen Chbosky

✨✨✨.5 / 5

If you enjoy books that are reminiscent of Catcher and the Rye, this book is for you. This book is written as a collection of letters from the author to the reader as he narrates his life. This book is a hauntingly beautiful tale of how childhood traumas may follow you through life and how the fears of the trauma happening again creep into your everyday. Like Catcher and The Rye, this is a book about coming of age and finally taking your future into your own hands, even if that doesn't look the same for everyone.

And Both Were Young by Madeleine L'Engle

✨✨✨.5 / 5

I like to read books that remind me of other books, haha. This book is about a girl who gets sent to an all-girls boarding school as her father travels and creates artwork for books. Our main character is slightly obsessed with the idea of her father remarrying a woman whom she does not like, not unlike most girls her age. However, our main lead finds comfort and companionship with an unlikely male in the town. Aspects of this book reminded me of The Little Princess, so if you have been looking for another book similar to that one, this is the book for you!

Sisi: Empress on Her Own by Allison Pataki

✨✨✨✨ / 5

This book will break your heart, mend it, and break it again. This book is the sequel to Pataki's book The Accidental Princess. Sisi's life is anything but a fairytale, and this book shows just how much pressure leaders of a country have put on them. I loved that this book also gave context as to how strong of a woman Sisi was. While many people doubted her abilities, she was sure of herself even in the moments she was nervous. This book made me cry, laugh, and hold my breath until the next thing was revealed.

Love and Other Theories by Alexis Bass

✨✨ / 5

This book was not my favorite. In this book, you meet a group of girls who are "evolved", which means they have figured out the dating game. The girls have decided to date according to the boy's rules, and it supposedly makes them better than other girls in their school. When Nathan, the new boy, moves in Aubrey decides the rules can be broken. This book annoyed me a good bit because it has the girl-hate troupe for no reason. I do not think I would recommend this book because it has many problematic plot lines and subplots.

Lakeshore Secretes by Shannyn Leah

✨✨✨ / 5

Nothing is ever as simple as it may seem. One thing this book does well is show that love is not always black and white, and sometimes your love for each other isn't enough. I like the idea of having a love story that also has a hidden scandal, and this book gave me what I wanted. This story gave the classic elements of sweethearts who broke up for a while, but not for the reason Marc thinks. There are secrets that drove his love away, but Kate is back and ready to fight for him again.

A Royal Pain by Megan Mulry

✨✨.5 / 5

This book started slow, picked up, and then slowed back down. I did enjoy this book until it felt like the plot line kept repeating itself. I felt that Mulry got to her climax before she intended and then had to backtrack to make the timeline work. This book does have a good bit of strong language if you are someone that doesn't love that, this may not be the book for you. However, this may be the book for you if you are in a reading slump and need a book to get you through it.

The Sock Wars by Maia Sepp

✨✨✨✨ / 5

When Lucy's aunt Maren dies and leaves her a house, Lucy suddenly has to decide the kind of life she wants for her future. Lucy's boyfriend, who is younger and more health conscious, is ready to get married and have children. Lucy is not sure that is the path she wants for her life. Lucy wants everything to be "perfect", and in order, she doesn't like surprises or mess. However, she knows that marriage and children will not fit into that category. We, the readers, get an inside look at how Lucy decides to handle her future while also commenting on the idea that women are only good for household chores.

That is all for this reading round-up! If you have read any of these books, and have differing opinions, share them below! I would love to know what you thought about them.
