Should you raise your own chickens?
Chickens are one animal that my family has ALWAYS had around. My dad grew up on the big family farm down in South Georgia, so when he moved to TN 30 years ago because of work, those South Ga roots were too deep to let go of, and a lot of what I do now, is because of those ties as well.
As I write this, I am watching my chickens eat some kitchen scraps I just threw out the back door for them, so that means I may be biased.
If you are like most people, you have probably noticed the ever-changing price of eggs at the grocery store. This is due to several different factors that I will not go into today because I am only here to persuade you that you NEED chickens! There are many benefits to having said chickens, so I am going to share with you what I have observed!
One of the first benefits of raising your own chickens is the obvious one, EGGS.
Eggs;
The price of eggs has doubled since 2020, and that is one of the mega reasons to raise chickens for their eggs. Not only do you get to know exactly where your food is coming from, but you also get added nutrition by eating your chicken's eggs. Backyard chickens are typically known for being higher in Vitamin E and fatty acids.
They turn the garden boxes over for you.
I have garden boxes and a compost bin that needs to be turned frequently. One benefit of having chickens, they do the manual labor for you. I see my girls in the garden beds and compost bin all Winter / early Spring, and I get excited knowing I don't need to turn everything over manually.
The only downside of the girls turning over my garden beds during dead season is when Spring comes, I have to keep them out of them, and that proves to be a challenge.
They are good for pest control
If you are tired of ticks, ladybugs, and other bugs then you NEED chickens.
They are good for your compost bins
I mentioned briefly above that chickens are great for compost bins because they turn over the bin, but they have other benefits as well. Their poop is also a great addition to your compost bin. Some studies show chicken manure is higher in nitrogen, potassium, phosphorus, and calcium, which are all things you want for a healthy gardening season.
They are funny.
Chickens are an animal that have very specific personalities, and the more time you spend with them, the more you can see them.
Bonus reasons to get them;
They are good for mental health
They eat food scraps meaning you cut down on food waste
If you sell eggs, they can bring in extra income
It is. a good way to spend more time outside
A lower carbon footprint for your home
Have I convinced you to get chickens or do you need me to make another post ?!
