What I read in January

The Bette Davis Club by Jane Lotter

4.5 / 5 stars

Margo is impossibly in love with a man whom she could not have.

Her niece is chasing the idea of money and excitement over love.

Her niece's fiance wants to know why Georgia left him at the altar.

With all of this information given at the beginning of the book, the chase is on! If you love old Hollywood, name-dropping, and drug lords going Rambo, then this book is 100% for you!

Margo and Tully, the niece's fiance, head off in a car chase during what is supposed to be Tully and Georgia's wedding reception. During the search for Georgia, Margo gets caught in her feelings about a man she was in love with but was never able to truly marry.

Finn was one of the first people Margo met when she came back to the US from London. He was an older gentleman and was very kind to her. The two started up a relationship, and soon after Finn proposes.

The relationship between Finn and Margo reminded me of the relationship between Freddie Mercury and his fiance before he came to the realization he was homosexual.

This book also reminisces on the glory days of Hollywood, since Margo's father was a very famous play-write! There are 2 scripts found in this book that people are willing to pay big money for, and that is one of the many reasons Georgia goes missing.

I would highly suggest this book to someone who wants a story that feels like a movie but is also compelling. While there are some very silly, and absurd scenes, this book was quite lovely.

The Overdue Life of Amy Byler by Kelly Harms

3 / 5 stars

I did like this book? -- Yes

Would I read this book again? -- No

Would I advise others to read this book? -- Maybe

Amy is a single mother of 2 children who are strangely advanced beyond their years.

One day she is walking through the market and sees her ex-husband, John, who has come back to try to spend some bonding time with the children.

Whilst the children are "bonding" with their estranged father, Amy decides to go to New York and spend time with her old college best friend and attend a library conference. While she is at the conference she meets the man of every woman's dreams. Tall, dark, handsome, well-read, and sensitive.

This book has a lot of fun elements, but I want to jump to the ending for a second. There is an injury with Amy's daughter and it felt like this was written to move the plot to the conclusion. I did not feel that this wending was done well. Yes, there were definitely aspects that were written well and it was clear as to why this situation happened, but then it also felt very rushed and not truly finished.

No More Bad Dates by Kate O'Keeffe

3 / 5 stars.

I felt like this was your typical boy and girl friends-to-lovers story, and there was not too much investment in either of their stories. All of the characters seemed to be pretty superficial. Even Sophie's, our main character, family was all about money.

Sophie and her friends decide that they are going to go on no more dates until their friend group has vetted potential suitors. This plan quickly goes bad when Sophie's roommate, Jason has decided he should be apart of this group as well. When Jason finds a problem with all of the guys Sophie introduces to the friend group, Sophie begins to reevaluate their friendship.

I wanted to like this story, but I felt like none of the characters were fleshed out very well. Sophie's parents are yes men, and her siblings continuously fight over who she should work for, FOR FREE!

This book was too problematic for me to give more than a 3 star and the more I think about it, the less I think it deserves.
